We are asking the players to show quick comprehension of the state of play, good passing technique and willingness to take risks. This drill is not about teaching team playing, it just happens to be a side effect. What we really want to see is intelligent playing and the requisite technical skills under competitive conditions. It is, of course, possible to put benches down each side, so that it is more of a challenge for the players.
Three players attack. They should work together, dribbling and shooting – anything goes. Two tacklers defend aggressively and try to stop a goal being scored. The benches should used by the attackers during their passing. The tacklers should be changed if the attackers do not score a goal.
- Only two touches of the ball per player
- Play 3:1 or 2:1
- Take away the benches
- Request more aggressive tackling
